The factors that actually matter
1. Payment speed and method
This is the biggest differentiator in the market. Some buyers use checks and others use digital payment. Neither method alone proves reliability; look for written timing, clear inspection terms, verified contact information, and a documented dispute process.
If payment method isn't clearly stated on a buyer's website, ask before you ship. "We'll pay you quickly" is not the same as "we pay same-day via Zelle."
2. Price transparency before you ship
A legitimate buyer gives you a cash offer before you commit to shipping. The offer should specify the amount per box or per item, what it's contingent on (condition, expiration), and what happens if something doesn't meet their requirements.
Prefer a buyer that provides a written estimate before shipment and explains when and why the amount may change after inspection.
3. Free prepaid shipping
Many mail-in buyers provide a prepaid label. Confirm the carrier, tracking, insurance or claims process, and whether any shipping cost can be deducted from payment. If a buyer asks you to pay for shipping or to use your own postage, that's a red flag.
4. What they do with supplies that don't qualify
Ask explicitly: if a box fails inspection (damaged, different from what was described), do you return it or discard it? A good buyer communicates clearly and either ships it back at their cost or gives you the option. A bad buyer quietly discards non-qualifying supplies without telling you.
